Turquoise water, white sand, resorts built for big celebrations and a short flight from many parts of the world. A Mexico destination wedding can be a three-day weekend for two hundred guests on the Caribbean coast, a cliffside dinner above the Pacific in Los Cabos, or a small gathering in the jungle near Tulum. We have filmed destination weddings in Mexico, and this guide shares what couples and their families should plan before the cameras arrive.
Why couples choose a Mexico destination wedding
Mexico has been one of the most popular wedding destinations in the world for years, and the way couples celebrate there keeps changing. Planners are seeing three clear trends for 2026 and 2027:
- Full wedding weekends. Welcome dinners with live music, yacht days, guest excursions and farewell brunches turn the trip into a holiday rather than a single event.
- Local character. Regional menus, local musicians and décor that suits the setting are replacing generic resort styling.
- One strong focal point. Instead of decorating every corner, couples are choosing a single dramatic backdrop or floral installation and letting the sea or the jungle do the rest.
All three are good news for a film. More events mean more story, and a setting that is allowed to breathe looks better on screen.

Choosing your region
Cancún and the Riviera Maya
The Caribbean coast is home to the large all-inclusive and luxury resorts that can host a whole wedding weekend on one property: ballrooms, beach ceremony sites, pools and enough rooms for every guest. For a large guest list, this is usually the simplest choice.
Tulum
A Tulum wedding film has a different look: jungle venues, cenotes, beach clubs and boutique hotels with natural textures. Guest counts are often smaller, and transport between venues needs more planning.
Los Cabos
A Los Cabos destination wedding sits on the Pacific side, with cliffside resorts, desert landscapes and dramatic sunsets over the ocean. Winter also brings whale season, which can give a boat day or a cocktail hour an unforgettable backdrop.
When to plan your wedding
Mid-November to April is the dry season across the main wedding regions and the most requested window. On the Caribbean side, June to November is hurricane season, and seaweed can arrive on some east-facing beaches between spring and early autumn. Los Cabos is usually at its best from October to June. Whatever month you choose, build in a covered backup for the ceremony and travel insurance for the guests.
Legal ceremony or symbolic ceremony?
Only a civil ceremony performed by the civil registry is legally binding in Mexico. It requires apostilled documents translated into Spanish, witnesses and a few days in the country before the ceremony, and the rules differ from state to state. That is why many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Mexico, which gives them complete freedom over the time, setting and wording. Your planner can confirm what applies to you.
Filming logistics for a Mexico wedding videographer
The best Mexico wedding videographer plans logistics as carefully as the creative side.
- Resort rules. Many resorts have their own policies on outside vendors, ceremony times, music curfews and equipment. We review these early so nothing surprises you on the day.
- Drone permits. Commercial drone flights are regulated by the federal aviation authority, and protected beaches, archaeological zones and the resort itself may each need to give permission. Aerial shots are planned from the side or from the water, never directly over guests.
- Heat and light. Midday sun is strong. We plan portraits for the early morning or the last hour before sunset, and keep the crew and couple out of the harshest light.
- Moving between events. Multi-day weekends often use several spaces on one property, so we map the schedule and crew positions in advance.

FAQ
What is the best time of year for a Mexico destination wedding?
Mid-November to April is the dry season and the most popular window. Los Cabos stays pleasant from about October to June. Late summer and early autumn carry the highest hurricane risk on both coasts.
Can foreign couples marry legally in Mexico?
Yes, through a civil ceremony with apostilled and translated documents, witnesses and a short stay in the country first. Requirements vary by state, so many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Mexico.
Can our Mexico wedding film include drone footage?
Often, yes. The operator must be registered for commercial flights, and the resort, local authorities and any protected areas must allow it. Aerial shots are flown beside or beyond the guests, not over them.
Should we choose Los Cabos, Tulum or the Riviera Maya?
The Riviera Maya suits large guest lists on one resort, Tulum suits smaller celebrations with a natural, boutique feel, and Los Cabos offers cliffside Pacific views and winter whale season.
