Few places look as cinematic as Santorini. White villas stacked along the cliffs, blue domes, a sea that changes colour through the day and a caldera that drops straight into the Aegean. A Santorini destination wedding can be an intimate vow exchange for a handful of guests, a weekend in a private cliffside villa, or a larger celebration at a winery or hotel on the island. Each version needs careful planning before the cameras roll, and this guide walks couples and their families through it.

Film Style Weddings has not yet filmed a wedding in Santorini, so this is a planning guide built on what we have learned filming destination weddings by the sea in Jamaica, Punta Cana and Mexico.

Why couples choose a Santorini destination wedding

Two trends for 2026 meet on the island. Couples are choosing smaller guest lists, often between ten and thirty people, and spending more on hospitality, food and experiences. Santorini suits that approach well: guests can arrive for a welcome dinner, spend a day on the water, attend the wedding at sunset and end with a long farewell lunch.

Planners also report a move toward simple, natural décor that lets the setting lead: white linen, olive branches, local flowers and candlelight. Winery venues, menus built on island produce and wine, and live acoustic music are popular. For a film, that restraint is a gift. The scenery already does the heavy lifting, so the camera can stay close to the people.

When to plan your Santorini destination wedding

May, June and September

The season runs roughly from May to October. June and September are the favourites: warm days, calmer crowds than midsummer and soft evening light. Venues for these months often book a year or more in advance.

July and August

High summer brings the most sunshine but also the heaviest crowds, the highest prices and strong afternoon winds on some days. If you choose these months, plan portraits for the early morning and keep a sheltered backup for the ceremony.

October

Early October can still be beautiful, with warm sea temperatures and fewer visitors. Some venues and suppliers start to close later in the month, so confirm dates early.

Legal steps and ceremony options

A civil wedding on the island is handled by the municipality’s civil weddings office in Fira. Each partner usually needs a valid passport, a full birth certificate and a certificate of no impediment, with documents apostilled and officially translated into Greek. Some documents must be issued within a few months of the wedding, and the licence is normally issued about a week after the application. Most planners suggest allowing eight to ten weeks for the paperwork.

Many couples prefer to marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Santorini, which gives total freedom over the time, place and wording. Your planner can confirm the current requirements for your nationality.

Filming rules and drone limits in Santorini

Whoever you choose as your Santorini wedding videographer, the logistics should be planned alongside the creative ideas.

  • The caldera villages are no-fly zones. Drone flights over Fira, Oia and Imerovigli are restricted, and the archaeological sites are off limits. Areas near the airport need a buffer as well.
  • Approvals take time. Drone operators must be registered with the Greek civil aviation authority, and flights in controlled zones need approval at least five working days ahead. For a luxury wedding in Greece, aerial footage is often more realistic at a private villa, a winery away from the caldera rim, or from a boat.
  • Crowds shape the schedule. Oia at sunset is one of the busiest viewpoints in Europe. Sunrise portraits, private terraces and boat shoots give you the views without the crowds.
  • Steps and cobblestones matter. Many cliffside venues are reached by long staircases, which affects how guests arrive, how dresses are carried and how much equipment the crew can bring.

Choosing a setting for a Santorini caldera wedding

A Santorini caldera wedding usually takes place at a cliffside hotel, a private villa with a terrace, or a dedicated venue with views across the water. Wineries in the south and centre of the island offer more space and a softer, rural look. A yacht or catamaran can host a sunset cruise for a small group or an intimate vow exchange at sea. Most multi-day celebrations combine two or three of these settings, so transport between them should be planned with the film schedule in mind.

How we would plan a Greece destination wedding film

A Greece destination wedding film follows our usual process: a full itinerary, venue walk-throughs or scouting, a drone and permit plan, then a crew sized to the events. Our destination wedding film guide explains each step, and our multi-day wedding film guide covers longer celebrations. Many couples also add a same day edit for the reception. See how we approach the sea and the sun in Fiona + Ricky’s Punta Cana wedding and Sanjay + Semira’s Jamaica wedding. Comparing Europe with other options? Starting points for your film

Every film is custom, and collections have clear starting points:

Collection Starting point
Destination from $50,000
The Legacy from $75,000+
Concept Films from $15,000

The final scope depends on the number of event days, locations, crew size and the films you want to keep. The Investment page explains how a consultation shapes your collection.

FAQ

What is the best time of year for a Santorini destination wedding?

June and September are the most popular, with warm weather, softer light and fewer crowds than July and August. The wider season runs from about May to October.

Can foreign couples marry legally in Santorini?

Yes, through the civil weddings office in Fira, with apostilled and translated documents. Allow eight to ten weeks for paperwork. Many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the island.

Can our Santorini wedding film include drone footage?

Sometimes. The caldera villages and archaeological sites are no-fly zones, and other areas need approval in advance. Private villas, wineries away from the rim and boat shoots are often the best options for aerial shots.

How do we avoid crowds in our Santorini wedding film?

Plan portraits at sunrise, use private terraces, and consider a boat for sunset. Famous viewpoints in Oia are very busy in the evening during the season.
