Tanzania has become one of the most talked-about places for a wedding abroad. Couples are drawn by the white beaches and warm, clear water of Zanzibar, the old streets of Stone Town, and the chance to add a safari in the Serengeti before or after the celebration. A Zanzibar destination wedding can be an intimate gathering of thirty guests at a private villa or a full weekend for several hundred at a beachfront resort. Either way, the film you take home depends on planning that starts long before anyone lands. This guide covers what couples and their families should think about.

Why couples are choosing a luxury wedding in Tanzania

Wedding trends for 2026 point in two directions at once: smaller, more personal guest lists with a higher standard of hospitality, and longer celebrations that turn a wedding day into a wedding week. Tanzania suits both. A luxury wedding Tanzania itinerary often combines a welcome dinner in Stone Town, a beach ceremony on the north coast of Zanzibar, and a few days on safari for the couple or the whole family.

For a film, that variety is a gift. Few weddings move through a historic town, an island beach and the plains of East Africa in one week, though that means more travel days and permits.

When to plan a Zanzibar destination wedding

The dry seasons

Zanzibar has two main dry windows. June to October is the most reliable, with clear skies and calm water. December to February is hotter but still dry. Both book up early at the best resorts and villas.

The rains

The long rains, roughly March to May, bring heavy downpours and some resort closures, and most planners advise against a beach ceremony in those months. The short rains around November usually arrive as brief showers, which can work with a good indoor or covered plan.

Light near the equator

Zanzibar sits close to the equator, so the sun sets at almost the same time all year and the soft evening light does not last long. A Zanzibar wedding videographer will time the ceremony, the portraits and the first moments of the reception around that short window, rather than leaving it to chance.

Beaches, tides and venues

Not every Zanzibar beach behaves the same way. On parts of the east coast the tide goes out a long way, leaving wide sand flats for hours, while the north of the island is less affected. If your ceremony faces the water, the tide table for your date matters as much as the weather forecast, and the planner, venue and film crew should all be working from it.

Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers carved wooden doors, rooftop terraces and narrow lanes that look wonderful on camera. Filming in public spaces there calls for respect for local customs: covered shoulders and knees are expected in town, and a crew should plan where and when to film with the venue and planner.

Drones and permits in Tanzania

Aerial shots of a reef or a beach ceremony are often near the top of a couple’s wish list, so it is worth knowing the rules early.

  • Every drone flight needs a permit. The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority asks visiting operators to apply for an import permit, register the drone and pilot, and obtain an operations permit at least three weeks before arrival. A drone that arrives without an import permit can be confiscated at the airport.
  • Permits are tied to locations. Filming at a new site may need its own approval or an amendment.
  • National parks have extra rules. Flying in a park needs further approvals, a ranger present, and in the Serengeti, no flights during river crossings.

Starting this paperwork as soon as the venues are set protects the shots you want most.

Adding a Serengeti safari wedding or session

A Serengeti safari wedding, or a couples’ session on safari after the main celebration, is one of the most cinematic additions to a Tanzania itinerary. It also comes with real limits. Light aircraft into the parks usually allow about 15 kg per person in soft bags, including cameras, so a film crew may need extra seats or a private charter to carry its equipment. Game drives run early in the morning and late in the afternoon, which happens to be the best light for filming. A safari segment can be planned as part of a multi-day wedding film, or as a stand-alone concept film.

Dar es Salaam wedding film and family celebrations

Many families pair a Zanzibar ceremony with an event on the mainland. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, has hotels that can host big receptions and is a short flight from the island. A Dar es Salaam wedding film covering a reception or family dinner can be woven into the same feature film as the island ceremony, so the whole week tells one story.

How Film Style Weddings plans a new destination

Film Style Weddings is a travelling production. We have filmed weddings in Mexico, the United Kingdom, India, Nigeria, Punta Cana, Jamaica and Paris, and every destination is planned the same way: a full itinerary first, venue walk-throughs by video call, a travel and permit plan, then a crew sized to the number of events. Our destination wedding film guide walks through each step, and our cinematic wedding film guide explains how we approach story, sound and light. For a beach wedding we have filmed, see Fiona + Ricky in Punta Cana.

Starting points for your film

Every film is custom, and collections have clear starting points:

Collection Starting point
Destination from $50,000
The Legacy from $75,000+
Concept Films from $15,000

The final scope depends on the number of event days, locations, crew size and the films you want to keep. The Investment page explains how a consultation shapes your collection.

FAQ

What is the best month for a Zanzibar destination wedding?

June to October is the most reliable dry season, with December to February a close second. Most planners avoid March to May because of the long rains.

Can we have a legal wedding in Zanzibar?

Yes, but Zanzibar has its own registry and its own document requirements, and the process can take several weeks. Many couples marry legally at home and hold their ceremony in Zanzibar. Your planner can confirm the current rules for your nationality.

Can our wedding film include drone footage in Tanzania?

It can, with permits. Drone flights need approval from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, applied for at least three weeks before arrival, plus extra permission for national parks.

Can you film a safari session as well as the wedding?

Yes. A safari segment can be added to a Destination collection or planned as a Concept Film. See our Destination page and Films archive for examples of our work.
